Nintendo responds to petition asking to name one of its characters Robin

Robin Williams, who had always been a keen fan of Nintendo games, took his own life on Monday after suffering a severe depression. He had been recently diagnosed with a serious illness. More details about this story can be found here.

Nintendo did not make any commitment so far in regards to what the petition is asking but they did answer it as follows. A Nintendo spokesperson communicated the following:
“Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo (…) Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times.

We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.”

But this is not the first petition of its kind in regards to Robin Williams. World of Warcraft fans did a petition of their own for Blizzard and earlier this week Blizzard communicated it is considering the request.

“Because of his [Robin Williams]presence within our community, we the players of World of Warcraft are asking Blizzard to kindly create an NPC within the game that memorializes the actor/comedian,” the petition reads. “Many have expressed a wish [that] this character perform some of Williams’ best jokes within the Worlds End Tavern, so that he may continue making us smile long after his passing.”

This is how the petition sounded. A World of Warcraft technical game designer confirmed that Blizzard is considering it.
