A survey conducted by MarketWatch expected the claims to rise by just a couple of thousands i.e. from 328,000 to 330,000. In accordance to a Labor official, there’s nothing usual in the recent report and there’s no indication whatsoever that cut-down in federal spending under sequester prompted the rise in numbers.
However, the average of new claims made over the past one month, increased by a smaller margin of 1,250 and stands as 339,250 which is close to a 50year low. The government also proclaimed that the claims reduced by 4,000 and now stands as 3.0 million up and till the week that ended on May 4. In the meantime, the revised initial claims rose to 328,000 from an originally reported figure of 323,000. The reports are based on data collected on state level.
