The message hidden under the small glowing candle reads: “Our hearts are with the families and community of Newtown, Connecticut”.

Introducing a Doodle that responds to a breaking news story is reportedly a first for Google. The official Google Doodle blog shows how Doodle’s were used in the past for celebrating certain events. But after a first glance over all the Doodles in existence so far the small white candle is the first Doodle that was introduced as a response to current breaking news.

The big search giant also offered some search query statistics regarding the recent events. According to Google the name of “Ryan Lanza”, he was wrongfully identified as the shooter by many news publications, was searched for by close to 5 million people world-wide.
