The monthly subscription cost for the premium service is $9.99. At the same time, the free but ad-supported version will remain available. Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn detailed the strategy in a post on the official company blog: “Subscribers will help keep language education free for millions of people around the world… Being able to download lessons is particularly appealing to those learning a new language for travel purposes who want to practice while flying or without a stable Wi-Fi connection”.
This is just another monetization strategy for Duolingo who tried everything from in application advertisements to certification courses. One of the most notable In-App Payments Duolingo is known for is the $4.99 IAP that allowed users to repair a broken streak record. Duolingo announced that iOS users will also see Duolingo Plus in the near future. For now the company will debut the service just on Android.
