Superior Barcelona blew Santos in style and crowned club world champions. Barcelona crushed Santos by 4-0, adding the prestigious world championship title to its European and Spanish honors.
Once again it was Lionel Messi who opened the scoring line for Barcelona. Xavi Hernández and Cesc Fabregas added two more to the score sheet before ending the first half and made the game completely one-sided. Santos tried to show something after the break which was not so enough to back them on track. Leo put the last pin on the coffin of Santos lately at 82/.
Like the early prediction, Santos started their battle with five men defense. Clearly, their intention was not conceding any early goal. As a result, their deep defense line allowed Barca to dominate the possession.
Santos’ goal-keeper Rafael proved his talents and made a double save with an extraordinary class. Santos’ defense was first broke by Lionel Messi with his classic mazy run but his long ranged shot was blocked by Rafael. In the mean time, Ganso made an early attempt but the left footed shot was just a little wider than Valdes’ left post.
The Catalans took the lead as Lionel Messi once again proved why he is the best footballer of the world at this present time. He picked up a lovely ball from Xavi Hernández and adroitly chipped the ball over the head of Santos’ goal-keeper. Bruno Rodrigo made an effort with a desperate dive but that was not enough to save a wonderful goal.
Just after 22 minutes, Xavi found a cross-field ball and made it too easy to make the score 2-0. It could have been 3-0 before first half an hour if Cecs’ close-ranged shot did not miss the post.
It was just before the half time break when Fabregas scored for the Catalans and made the score-line
3-0. Though the first half was completely dominated by Barca, Santos showed little more in second half. But that did not help them to come back into the game in any way. However, Dani Alves played in Messi free on the corner of the box and Leo passed over Rafael to guide the ball to its destiny and made the difference four goals to nil.
