Marlins pitcher José Fernández was killed in a boating accident in Miami

Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández, 24,  who defected from Cuba at 15 and went on to become one of baseball's brightest stars, was killed early Sunday with two other men also in their 20s in a boating accident. Their boat, a 32-foot SeaVee center console model,  was discovered at the entrance of Miami Harbor upside down on the north end of a rocky jetty.

Vladimir Guerrero retires from baseball

Vladimir Guerrero, Los Angeles slugger and perhaps the greatest all-time Expo, officially announced his retirement on Saturday in the Listin Diario newspaper. The article from the Dominican Republic newspaper which announced the retirement of the 38 year-old baseball player was written by Hector Gomez.

Tony Gwynn died at age 54

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn died at age 54. He had a salivary gland cancer and his life in the last years was a battle to survive. In 2009 a malignant tumor was removed from his right cheek. The cancer returned twice. The announcement of his death was made by MLB and San Diego Padres officials on Monday.
