It has been six years since the Liverpool fans celebrated a trophy win. But their long waiting has come to an end as they won the Carling Cup under new boss Kenny Dalglish.
The famous club has been going through a turbulent ride for the last few years. But now they are eyeing for bigger & better shots.
Manager Dalglish says that this is the first of many to arrive. He said that this trophy will give them the boost they needed.
Steven Gerrard says that Carling Cup isn’t their ultimate target and they want a fair piece of action of the Champions League and more.
But the story could’ve been very different as Liverpool had almost blown it.
Cardiff got a shocking 1st half lead thanks to Joe Mason. Getting a ball from Miller, he gave a wonderful finishing through Pepe Reina’s legs, leaving the red half stunned.
Then Cardiff put more effort into defending and overall also did a good job preventing a few handball appeals.
This brought up huge frustration among the Liverpool fans. Then Dalglish brought up Craig Bellamy, something he should have done long ago.
An equalizer was on the way shortly and had nothing to do with Bellamy. Martin Skrtel took advantage of a corner ball rerouted towards the posts by a series of bodies and gave the red’s supporters a chance to rejoice.
After that Liverpool started pushing Cardiff to its very limits as Downing and Adam kept challenging Heaton. Cardiff handled the pressure quite well and also created a massive chance to garb victory.
Striker Kenny Miller wasted a golden chance to seal the deal in the last moments. His dazzling spinning flew over the bars.
Both sides fought and restricted each other until the referee blew his whistle. At 90 minutes score was 1-1.
At the beginning of the extra time Liverpool started to dominate and also got the result as substitute Dirk Kuyt’s shot found its way to the nets in the 108th minute marking a 2-1 lead.
But the show wasn’t over yet. The game still got some surprises left. The red’s joy was short lived as Turner turned a corner into an equalizer with Kuyt’s desperate effort to prevent.
Then the match turned to the crucial penalty shootouts. Gerrard, Miller and Charlie Adam missed their chance to score, followed by Gestede. On the other hand, Cowie, Kuyt, Downing, Whittingham and Johnson didn’t waste their shots. Finally, it was up to a man named Anthony Gerrard, cousin of Steven Gerrard to bring the trophy to Cardiff.
Crucially he missed and the Carling Cup’s fate was revealed. Liverpool had won the Carling Cup.
